How Did 4/20 Get Started?
There are many legends in the weed world about how 4/20 got its start, ranging from cryptic song lyrics to the police code for a marijuana violation. Most of the cannabis community, however, has agreed that the moniker for weed first began at a San Rafael, California high school in the early 1970s. A group of friends heard about a cannabis plant growing in the woods nearby, and became obsessed with finding it. They’d meet outside of their school every day at 4:20 to smoke a joint and head into the forest to look for the plant.
While they never found the plant, the term 4/20 quickly became code for weed among the group. The friends became close with some members of the Grateful Dead, and soon, the term was used in the cannabis-themed magazine High Times. From there, 4/20 became synonymous with weed throughout the cannabis community.
