Urbana in the Mission and on Geary are gearing up to celebrate 4/20 like never before. We are planning multiple events and deals for the April 20th weekend. We can’t wait to invite customers, new and old, to our San Francisco dispensaries.
What is 4/20?
The term 420 is believed to have originated right in our home state of California. At San Rafael, a group of high schoolers developed 420 as a code to meet up after school. They would smoke pot at that time and also search for a rumored abandoned cannabis farm. The teens were known as “Waldos,” and one of them eventually became a roadie for Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead. The 420 phrase spread as flyers would get passed out at concerts, inviting others to meet at a location at “4:20 for 4-20ing.” The story was shared with “High Times” in the 1990s, and it became canon for why April 20th is used to celebrate cannabis.
Celebrations for 4/20 began popping up around the 1990s, especially in cities like San Francisco. A well-known city tradition is “420 at Hippie Hill.” Thousands and thousands of weed fans meet at the Sharon Meadows Area of Golden Gate Park, also known as “Hippie Hill.” There’s music, on-site dispensaries, food, and more during the annual event.
